Project Overview
As part of MBTA’s multi-billion-dollar Capital Investment Plan, Reliance Engineers is supporting the development and implementation of a robust Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) framework to advance the agency’s long-term goals of safety, reliability, modernization, and system sustainability. With over $9.6 billion in planned investments over five years, MBTA’s strategic focus on Asset Management is a cornerstone of its commitment to maintaining infrastructure in a State of Good Repair (SGR).
Reliance’s Role:
Reliance is collaborating with MBTA’s Office of the Chief Engineer (OCE) and the Office of Reliability Engineering to implement Asset Management and Lifecycle Modeling functions across the agency. The initiative integrates capital planning, condition assessments, and maintenance prioritization into a unified system-wide strategy aimed at:
Supporting medium- and long-term infrastructure investment planning
Strengthening critical maintenance functions
Enhancing capital project development and prioritization
Supporting compliance with the FTA’s Transit Asset Management (TAM) Rule – 49 CFR Part 625
Key Contributions:
Supported the rollout and integration of the Trapeze EAM System, improving data accuracy and capital forecasting
Contributed to lifecycle asset modeling to support informed decisions across acquisition, operation, maintenance, and replacement
Assisted in the development of asset documentation protocols to catalog infrastructure condition, age, and service levels
Supported process improvements for capital project prioritization based on asset condition and criticality
Participated in benchmarking MBTA’s asset management maturity against global standards and models
Provided input into the agency’s Transit Asset Management Plan (2022), ensuring alignment with current best practices and regulatory expectations
Impact:
Through its work on this program, Reliance Engineers is helping institutionalize Asset Management across the MBTA—ensuring long-term sustainability and increased transparency in infrastructure investments. By embedding data-driven, risk-aware processes into decision-making, this initiative is improving reliability, reducing maintenance costs, and elevating MBTA’s role as an industry leader in public transportation management.
